Microsoft's New Windows 10 Mobile Preview Now Available For More Phones

Two months ago, Microsoft announced the first build of Windows 10 for phones. The first build was very basic and was missing a lot of the Windows 10 functionality as promised by Microsoft and it was quite obvious for the first beta build. It was limited to just a handful of devices which then had a very small audience. Today that is changing, and the new build (10051) is available to its Windows Insider users. Notably, this new build is available on almost every single Nokia/Microsoft phone with the big exception of the high-end Lumia 930/Icon, as well as the just released Lumia 640XL because of screen scaling issues. Also, Windows Phone devices made by Microsoft OEMs are not supported.

With this new build, many of the core apps have been updated to have a new user experience. Project Spartan, which was first seen in the latest Windows 10 desktop build, is now replacing Internet Explorer on the phone as well. Considering the performance difference between mobile CPUs and desktop CPUs, the performance improvements in Project Spartan should make an even bigger difference.

Other than the inclusion of the new Project Spartan browser, Redmond-based tech firm also introduced universal app versions of Outlook Mail and Outlook Calendar. Both the new apps now comes with a new refreshed UI along with a toggle to easily switch between the calendar and the email sections. Outlook will now leverage Word for email composition as well, which should drastically improve the experience on mobile. It now comes with customization swipe gestures, letting users swipe left or right to delete, flag, move, or mark as read/unread. Features like inserting tables, adding pictures and using bullets and text are also included.

The Phone and Messaging apps are also new. Both have new visual designs. Users also have easy access to voice calls from within the Messaging app with one click on the phone icon in the new app bar. The People and Maps app are also redesigned.

All of these apps can now be accessed through a new App Switcher introduced in this build. Users can view the updated app switcher by long-pressing the back button on the phone - and it now supports landscape mode and offers a grid layout on larger devices which have extra screen real estate.

Few of the fixes in this build are related to keyboard layout, Cortana icon resolution, photo app, and Microsoft Band sync. However some issues still remain to be solved. According to the company, the new Maps app "includes the best maps, aerial imager, rich local search data, and voice-guided navigation experiences from both Bing Maps and HERE maps, integrated together for the first time into a single app for Windows".
