elementary OS team this weekend released the latest version of their Linux Distribution, code named "Freya". elementary OS is based on Ubuntu and makes use of a desktop with its own shell named Pantheon. Initially, the distribution started as a set of themes designed for Ubuntu but later turned into its own Linux distro. It is also compatible with all the Ubuntu-based repositories and packages.
In Linux world, elementary OS is considered to be the most beautiful and elegant one due to its simple and minimalist design. Not only Linux users are attracted to the stripped down OS but also Windows and Mac users find it appealing and user-friendly.
"Freya's design is much more purpose driven and focused. We spent a lot of time taking advantage of new toolkit features like Header Bar, improved CSS support, and animations. There's a much greater level of fluidity when you navigate or reveal a new part of the interface", says Daniel Fore, founder and lead designer of elementary OS.
Freya is the third stable version of elementary OS. Earlier, it was code-named Isis but was later changed to avoid association with the terrorist group ISIS. It is based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS which will be get updates until 2019. Users can download the "Freya" release of elementary OS for free from this link.
