History was created once again when Sania Mirza made the nation proud by claiming the No. 1 rank in Women’s Tennis Doubles along with partner Martina Hingis on Sunday. This is her second groundstroke after her stunning title win at the WTA Family Circle Cup.
Sania Mirza is now the only woman from India and fourth from Asia, to have won the Grand Slam Events. Prior to this wave of pride for the country, back in the 90’s, only Mahesh Bhupati and Leander Paes have been successful in bagging this position while they were conquering the men’s doubles circuit.
This Indo-Swiss pair conquered the challenges of Casey Dellacqua and Darija Jurak, 6-0 6-4 in mere 57minutes. The duo have lost only 3 sets in 14 matches, spread over 3 tournaments and are currently the world No. 1 doubles team in the Road to Singapore doubles leaderboard, where the top-8 teams compete at the end of the year.
In her own words, Hingis said, "I can't think of a better person to do it with. When we came here we had one thing in mind, to get No.1, and she really helped me get there. She helped me through some tough moments this week. She's just a great person and a great player. We also become the No.1 team in the world today with this.”
The duo lost serve in the first game of the second set but reverted back immediately, Over the first 22 minutes, the winners tackled the Australian - Croatian pair and shifted the game in their favor by opening with a huge 4-1 lead. Casey and Darija, refusing to give up gradually narrowed the margin. But the unbreakable spirit of the this team eventually led them to their victory. Throughout the game, they kept their nerves and finally smashed their opponents in the 10th game by closing the match in their favor.
